I think hell got another dimension and nobody really talks about it because it doesn't look like hell.
Like old hell makes sense.
You die and then you're in some fucked up place forever and there's fire and a demon is stabbing you or whatever.
That is very understandable.
You are there.
The demon is there.
The fire is there.
You know what the problem is.
I think now everything is spread out through time so you can never actually point at the thing that is fucking you because half of it happened three months ago and the other half hasn't happened yet.
I am being raped every day.
Not literally obviously.
Just by like everything.
Everything has access to me.
Everything wants something.
My phone wants something.
My bank wants something.
My car wants something.
The government wants something.
Some website I bought one shirt from in 2022 wants something.
Kroger wants something.
Google wants something.
The dentist wants something.
My fucking teeth want something.
Everything that exists has somehow figured out a way to create a future obligation for me.
This is what I mean by 4D.
Nothing happens once anymore.
Nothing is ever just the thing.
You buy something and then the thing follows you.
Receipt.
Shipping notification.
Delivered.
How was your order?
Would you like to review your order?
Here are some things similar to the thing you already bought.
Your card has been charged.
Your statement is ready.
Your payment is due.
Your payment has been received.
Like holy shit.
I bought pants.
Why are the pants still happening to me.
This is what I mean.
Nothing ends.
Everything has a tail.
You give someone your email once and now they're allowed to talk to you until you die.
You make an account once and now the account is just sitting somewhere forever.
You download an app once and now every six months it crawls back out of the grave like HEY DARON WE MISSED YOU.
No you didn't.
You are fucking software.
You don't know me.
And I think this is why doing nothing feels so bad now.
Because you are never actually doing nothing.
You can be lying in bed completely horizontal, like not moving at all, and somehow you are still behind.
There is something you should answer.
Something you should cancel.
Something you should pay.
Something you should update.
Somebody you should text.
Something you should apply for.
Something you should check.
Something that is probably charging you $9.99 right now because you forgot it existed.
And the fucked up thing is none of this is happening in front of you.
There is not a guy in the room yelling at you.
There is no boss standing next to the bed.
There is no cop.
There is no demon.
You are just laying there and the future is accumulating around you.
This is way more evil I think.
Because at least if some guy is beating your ass you know you're being beaten.
Now you just feel vaguely bad.
You wake up feeling like something is wrong.
You check the phone.
Nothing is even happening.
You still feel behind.
Because everything accrues.
Ignore the email and now there are four emails.
Ignore the bill and now there is a late fee.
Ignore the dentist and now the tooth is worse.
Ignore somebody and now you have to explain why you ignored them.
Ignore your car and now the noise gets louder.
Ignore the job thing and now you have less money.
Everything gets stronger when you don't interact with it.
Hell has compound interest.
This is why I think the fourth dimension matters.
The punishment isn't really what is happening to you right now.
The punishment is that everything you have ever interacted with has some little hook in your future.
You are basically dragging your entire administrative history behind you everywhere you go.
And I don't think humans were supposed to live like this.
Like obviously people had obligations before.
I'm not retarded.
A medieval guy had to feed his family and not freeze to death and probably got kicked by a horse and died at 31.
I'm not saying his life was easy.
I'm saying his problems were probably located somewhere.
The cow is sick.
The roof is leaking.
There is no food.
Some guy is invading.
These are extremely bad problems.
But you can see them.
I think the modern problem is you have 500 tiny invisible relationships with systems that all think they are entitled to continue existing in your head.
And they're all polite.
This is the funniest part.
I used to think dystopia would be like some giant screen yelling at you and cops everywhere and everyone in grey jumpsuits.
Instead it's:
WOULD YOU LIKE TO ENABLE NOTIFICATIONS?
No.
ARE YOU SURE?
Yes.
MAYBE LATER?
Okay.
ACCEPT ALL COOKIES?
No.
MANAGE PREFERENCES?
Fuck you.
The rape of modern life has incredible UX.
Everything asks permission but somehow saying no takes longer.
This is an insane development.
Nobody has to force you to do anything anymore.
They just make compliance one click and resistance seven clicks.
And you do this like fifty times a day.
Yes.
Accept.
Continue.
Verify.
Send code.
Enter code.
Remember this device.
Confirm identity.
Link account.
Continue with Google.
Allow location.
Allow while using app.
Allow once.
Not now.
Maybe later.
Maybe later is probably the most dystopian button ever made.
Because it already assumes there will be a later.
The thing has a future with you now.
It has penciled itself in.
I think this is also why people get obsessed with cabins and farms and RVs and monasteries and shit.
I don't think half these people actually want to farm.
I definitely don't want to farm.
I would get annoyed by the dirt in like four hours.
The fantasy is not agriculture.
The fantasy is that nothing knows where you are.
The fantasy is having like three things.
One room.
One chair.
Some food.
A shirt.
A phone that maybe doesn't work that well.
Nobody emailing you.
Nothing renewing.
Nothing expiring.
Nothing updating.
Nothing asking you to verify yourself.
You wake up and there is only the day.
That's the fantasy.
Not being rich.
Not being poor.
Just not having 400 things attached to your future.
I think that's why I like the idea of the horizontal day too.
Because the horizontal day is basically trying to leave time.
You are not doing tomorrow.
You are not fixing yesterday.
You are just laying there.
But the problem is the phone is still there.
The bank is still there.
The account is still there.
The calendar is still there.
The email is still there.
You can't actually leave.
Part of you is already everywhere.
Part of you is in your Gmail.
Part of you is in your bank.
Part of you is in the DMV.
Part of you is in some Klarna account.
Part of you is in a doctor's office.
Part of you is in somebody else's phone.
Part of you is in a password manager.
Part of you is in a website you haven't logged into in six years that somehow still knows your birthday.
You are spread out.
This is what I mean by 4D nigger hell.
You are never actually where you are.
Your body can be sitting in a chair doing literally nothing and there are still 50 versions of you out there creating obligations for the one sitting in the chair.
And I think this is why people feel tired without doing anything.
Because maybe you didn't do anything today.
But there are 700 things with access to tomorrow.
